CNN – “Doug Jones on Tuesday became the first Democrat in a generation to win a Senate seat in Alabama, beating Republican Roy Moore amid a firestorm of allegations that the GOP candidate had sexually abused teens.
Moore, however, refused to concede Tuesday night. “When the vote is this close … it’s not over,” Moore told supporters after Jones declared victory.
The results are nothing short of an embarrassment for President Donald Trump and a disaster for Republicans in Washington as the reliably red state of Alabama elected its first Democratic senator since the early 1990s.”
Charles Barkley’s take on this election is absolutely accurate:
This was absolutely a referendum on Alabama but not in the way that Chuck had hoped. Yes, Doug jones was able to scrape out a 1% win over known pedophile, misogynist, racist, and madman Roy Moore, but the slim margin tells us even more about the state of our country than the actual winner and loser.
It’s great that Roy Moore lost. No doubt about it. But to say that this election is indicative of the changing of the tides in America I believe is naive. Democrats lose races because they consistently underestimate their opponents.
When I say “opponents” I don’t actually mean their republican and libertarian counter parts. I’m referring to the voters that make up the American electorate. The democratic party seems to be doing battle more with the apathy and the ignorance of the American people than with the ideology of their opposition.
